Pre-Engineering Program at Carthage

Carthage Technical Center is proud to offer comprehensive pre-engineering and biomedical sciences programs for Junior and Senior High School students.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a national non-profit organization established to help schools give students the knowledge they need to excel in high-tech-fields. PLTW’s instruction, generally one-third theory and two-thirds application, gives students meaningful, hands-on experience in problem-solving, teamwork, and project-based learning.

PLTW is the only program of its kind in the nation. It is presently offered in over 900 schools in 42 states and the District of Columbia and is affiliated with such groups as NASA, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and others.

The sequence of high school courses in the PLTW Biomedical Sciences program parallels the proven PLTW Engineering program. The initial program includes four courses, all aligned with appropriate national learning standards:

  • Principles of the Biomedical Sciences (PBS)
    • This course is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the Biomedical Sciences program and lay the scientific foundation for subsequent courses.
  • Human Body Systems (HBS)
    • Students examine the interactions of body systems as they work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.
  • Medical Interventions (MI)
    • Students investigate the variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the lives of a fictitious family.
  • Biomedical Innovation (BI)
    • In this capstone course, students apply their knowledge and later present their work to an adult audience that may include representatives from the local business and healthcare community.
For more information about PLTW Program, please go to www.pltw.org.
Many Colleges and Universities, including Rochester Institute of Technology, will credit PLTW students with Undergraduate Credit -
