WelcomeToColumbian's Computer Lab

Time is permitted for classes at Columbian Elementary School to use the computer lab each week.  Each class is receives 50 minutes of technology instruction from Mrs. Lawrence. Through varied activities the students will gain greater knowledge of the computer. . The students are introduced to skills appropriate to their grade level, age and knowledge of the technology used with specific lessons.  In addition to the scheduled sessions classroom teachers may reserve the computer lab

Technology provides us with a variety of activities and lessons that allow us to assist the classroom teacher with the education of each student. Areas of math, reading comprehension, spelling, and writing are enhanced, as each must read and follow directions in order to complete an assignment.

Microsoft Word and other processing programs are used as an alternative to using pencil and paper. Students create slide shows using Power Point and they learn to create art with the use of Paint, Kid Pix and other drawing applications. Data is compiled with the use of Excel and other programs. Several programs provide educational fun through games that reinforces the classroom instructions.

All students must have the permission of parent or guardian in order to access the Internet.

While using the Internet to research for information, students are learning how to use the World Wide Web correctly and safely.  Students quickly learn that looking for information on the Internet is not easy.  It takes time and lots of patience.  Each needs to have knowledge and understand the parts of web pages and websites.

The Internet is used for educational purposes.  Students will occasionally be given time to use the Internet for FUN as they have the chance to play educational games on the net, but most of the student’s time will be spent that relate to their classroom work. When playing games, the computer instructor may prohibit certain sites if he/she believes the games provide inappropriate material and encourage bad behaviors.

Users will only access the Internet under appropriate supervision.

The computer instructor will make every effort to ensure that students are directed only to sites where topics provide appropriate materials and resources.  This is accomplished in several ways.  Students are not permitted to surf the net.  Students access several websites that are set up by the computer instructor in favorites.  The instructor also creates specific web pages with lesson directions and web address that are linked to the lesson.

Users shall not use school technology resources to create, distribute, download, or view obscene, illegal or any inappropriate content.  User should immediately inform the instructor if they encounter material that is inappropriate, offensive or otherwise makes them feel uncomfortable.

Students will not reveal personal addresses or phone numbers.

In order to ensure that users are using the system responsible, each should be aware that all use of technology equipment within the Carthage School District may be monitored and subject to review.  Network personnel and/or computer instructor may review files and communications without prior notice or permission of the user.
